Understanding Validity vs. Subscription Periods for SSL Certificates

 3 min

SSL certificates come with two important dates – the validity period and the subscription period. Here’s what you need to know:

Validity refers to how long the certificate is valid for creating secure connections between your web server and your site visitors’ browsers. Maximum validation goes upto 13 months.

Subscribers pay for SSL certificates for a specific period. This occurs when the billing cycle for a product expires, and it needs to be renewed.

To find these dates:

  • Go to your MilesWeb’s client area.
  • Navigate to My Services, click My Domains.
  • You will get the list of active domains. Choose your ones and click on Manage.
  • You will get details like SSL Status, SSL Start Date, SSL Issuer, and SSL Expiry Date.

There is a difference between the subscription period and the validity period. SSL certificates will expire based on their validity period, even if you pay for a longer subscription.

If you’re wondering what to do when it’s time to renew, here’s what you can expect for:

  • With a MilesWeb subscription, we’ll automatically revalidate and install your certificates every year.
  • The certificate will be reissued free of charge every year. However, verify the domain ownership to complete the reissuance and reinstallation of SSL.
  • If you are using a non-MilesWeb hosting provider, you will need to reissue your certificate every year manually.

Note: We offer core SSL certificates if a hosting plan is purchased from MilesWeb. It includes seamless installation and its technical management on your behalf. This way you focus on other tasks while we look after your domain’s security.

SSL Certificate Renewal Process

Your SSL certificate will be reissued 30 days before it expires, right at the end of its current validity period, giving you enough time to install the new certificate. If the new certificate is not installed before the current one expires, your website will no longer be secure.

Note: Even though renewal begins early, the new certificate’s validity will only start after your current certificate expires, ensuring uninterrupted security coverage.
